Summer, Winter, Fall or Spring. One portal to the beauties of Vermont is The Whetstone Inn.
In summer, music gloriously permeates Marlboro. A unique bounty of chamber music is offered by the Music School and Festival, which have been shaped by and home to legendary musicians — Adolph and Herman Busch; Marcel Moyse and Blanche Moyse; Pablo Casals, for sixteen precious summers; Alexander and Mischa Schneider; Felix Galimir, Yo Yo Ma, Richard Goode, Mitsuko Uchida; and, of course, Rudolf Serkin, for so long Marlboro’s music director.
Festival concerts, scheduled throughout July and well into August, draw upon an international community of musicians. And they, like the school’s patrons and constituency are drawn to a music center “unlike that in any other place…I don’t know anything equal to it.” (Pablo Casals)
Amid winter snows cross-country skiing begins exactly at the front door of the Whetstone. From there, it fans out on a variety of trails which traverse the diverse terrain that surrounds the Inn and village.
Within minutes of the Inn, Mount Snow offers a wide range of down-hill skiing facilities for entertaining the family or challenging the expert. More distant, but reachable options, include Stratton, Okemo and Killington.
Year round, hiking amid Vermont’s beauties begins at the Inn. Golfing at Mount Snow’s scenically spectacular course in West Dover, and tennis and mountain biking also, are less than half-an-hour away, while lake swimming is at hand.
To Marlboro and Brattleboro, the appeal of the Vermont way of life, the music of the summer, nearby Putney School, and the School for International Training have attracted a growing community of artisans. As a consequence, the visitor is offered the enrichment of a varied selection of art and craft products.
